US Elections

Missed opportunity- published 06/11/04

ANNE Campbell's comments on the US election ("MPs toe party line", November 2) confirms long held suspicions.

Her endorsement of Kerry on the grounds that he might be "not quite such a warmonger" ignored the fact that his stance on Iraq, the Palestinian question and the validity of using force to obtain political ends is every bit as unacceptable as that of Bush.

This was a missed opportunity to speak out over the unjust nature of international politics, epitomised by the lack of representation in the US elections, where the choice was between two parties, both bedfellows of big business and lacking any environmental conscience or social awareness.

Mrs Campbell is as guilty as Tony Blair in helping to turn British politics toward the US- style parody of democracy.

Having disenfranchised a massive proportion of the electorate by supporting New Labour's cuts and privatisations to our public services, she is now left to look to the minority that is the Middle England swing voter.
