I was dismayed to read (News 7th March) that Cambridgeshire County Council have not disciplined Councillor Gail Kenney for the racist and islamophobic comments she made toward the young group of Cambridge women last summer.
It is a disgrace that a councillor can be so disrespectful to young people when they are trying to engage with democracy. It is further shameful that the Council should virtually dismiss the complaint when the group had the courage seek justice and stand up for their rights.
Muslim’s are already being made scapegoats by the Government. New Labour have courted racism in order to try and justify their failed ‘War on Terror’. However this should not be an excuse for local representatives to follow suit. What Councillor Kenney said would have rightly lost most of us our jobs. In the current political climate our local representatives and public bodies should be going out of their war to ensure that every on in our community feels that they are supported and treated equally.

On January 24, for the first time in two and a half years, MPs debated the Iraq war. Tony Blair showed his contempt for parliament and for the British people, by missing the debate and speaking instead to the Confederation of British Industries.

Some people still say that the 2 million people who marched against the invassion of Iraq in February 2003 did not make a diference. The same people aslo say that marching again on the 24th of February this year will not make a diference. This is a ridiculous idea. i will explain why!
If people in every major world capitol city had not protested against the Wars on Afghanistan and Iraq then France may have gone along with the US plans, pro War Prime Ministers Belesconi in Italy and Asnar in Spain would still be in power and supporting the war with troops, Greece would have sent troops and countless others would have been more complicite or stayed involved with the 'coalition of the willing' for longer.
Iraq would have been bombed twice as much as it has been - 100,000 people died in the first two weeks of 1990 air strikes partly because there was no mass mobilisation of anti war activists in the US and UK. Iran and Siria, Lebanon and Palestine would be under US led occupations by now. Not for the good of working people but to extend multi the nationals profit base and extract oil to make profit for people who are already far to rich. Its possible that Somalia, Nigeria and Sudan would be under the same fate.
With more military support from 'Pro US' Governments the US would not be tied up in Iraq. Instead they may well have re-engaged in South America. Venezuala, Nicuagua, Bolivia, Argentina and Chile may have experienced interventions by now with the aim of countering growing rejection of US dominated economics.
Of course we may well still see an atempt to carry out much of this! What some people don't realise, until the bastard come directly for them, is how much resistance ordinary people are putting up around the world on a day to day basis.
Not all of this comes in the form of mass anti war demonstrations, much if not much more of it happens in workplaces or colleges in the shape of strikes and other industrial action and is far more effective and does have the potential to actually Stop the War. However the mass mobilisations builds confidence and support for the industrial struggle, it provide a clear political focus for a broad range of people.
We must continue to organise in the workplace and on the streets. Join Us.

20,000 new dawn raiders – we must demonstrate

George Bush’s announcement this morning was inevitable. 20,000 more US marines to help ‘free Iraq’ and end the ‘civil war’.
He says the majority will be used in Baghdad to work with Iraqi forces on activities like ‘neighbourhood clearance’. What a hideous concept, another act of terror dressed up in media friendly language like: friendly fire, daisy-cutters, humanitarian wars, hearts and minds and bringing democracy – we just don’t buy it any more.
Neighbourhood Clearances may sound like a reconstruction operation. But realistically Bush has just given US forces, along with the last of the pro US Iraqis, carte blanche for a continued and escalated house by house raid and searches stratagy. The intention – to find people who are against the US occupation. That includes almost everyone who has not joined the Iraqi army and even some of those in the Iraqi army. This plan will inevitably lead to hundreds and thousands of deaths and further resentment of the occupying forces, another generation of traumatized US soldiers end, if you thought it possible, more sectarian chaos.
The situation at home could not be more clear. A huge ground swell of public opinion against the continuing war both in the UK and the US has been topped by an outcry at Saddam Hussein’s execution. Scared as to what would be revealed if he was tried in the Hague, the western establishment has just sighed relief whilst distancing themselves from the grizzly deed.
The public knows that in Saddam Hussein vital evidence has been destroyed. Justice has not been done. Only one of the partners in the crimes committed against Kurds, Iraqis, Iranians and Kuwaiti's during the 80’s and 90’s has been held to account.
Ronald Reagan’s headstone stays shinny whilst George Bush senior, Bill Clinton, Thatcher, Blair, Brown, Aznar, Berlusconi, Rumsfeld, Cheney and George W Bush along with countless others including the 393 Britsh MP’s who voted to invade Iraq, are now sleeping better with the knowledge that many of the crimes committed with weapons sold by western governments, often with backing and diplomatic knowledge, have gone to the grave with the scapegoat dictator.
It is now vital that we counter the war surge with a peace surge. We must mobilise as many as possible for the demonstration in London on February 24th and show the Government that we will hold them to account and we will not tolerate any further support of world Terror.

Demonstrations Matter!

When, as from time to time I have heard people say ‘we marched against the but they didn’t listen’ I think they are wrong. It is true that we have had to put up with a government that ignores the majority of the people when it matters most but over the last five years the mass mobilisations of people around the Stop the War coalition have acted as a beacon of hope for not just the people of Britain but for those opposed to the Bush/Blair project all over the world.
We have helped Iraqis and Afghanis, Palestinians and Iranians understand that we are different to our government. As although pictures like this one from Manchester last weekend rarely make the press in Britain and the US, they are a priority on the News agenda in the Middle East.
The demonstrations have also been a constant pressure on Tony Blair and the other war mongers in the corridors of power and it is clear to all that Blair’s resignation is because of his Pro War stance.
Demonstrations are not stand alone events. They give activists an oppotunity to talk and work together to build politically and to find a voice and an alternative to the limited choice we are so often offered from the mainstream. Blair will go but we will stay. The fight back has started. Long may it continue!

Cambridge Stop the War collected 2000 names on a petition calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. Cambridge Stop the War handed the petition to David Howarth MP who signed the petition and agreed to arrange for representatives from Cambridge to deliver the petition to 10 Downing Street. The date set for this is the 18th of October.
Respect fully support the demands of the Stop the War coalition and are continuing our campaign for justice and the right to self determination for the Palestinian people.

I am appalled with the British governments continuing complicity with the US foreign policy. The ongoing occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan are counter productive and threaten ‘lasting global stability’. Further to New Labours refusal to withdraw the troops the British Government is now supporting a new war on a new front in Gaza and Lebanon, Tony Bair is also threatening Iran and Syria. It is a disgrace that our elected representatives, from local councillors to our MP, are not reflecting the mass of public opinion in condoning Blair’s chauvinism toward George Bush and US capitalism and his appetite for state terrorism. British political society must not turn the other cheek. Their failure to oust him for previous war crimes has led to his perpetual re offending. All of those who do not speak out against him must burden responsibility. Blair must go now!

You could not make it up! Tony Blair is acting with such arrogance. He is once against showing how out of touch he is with the overwhelming public opinion. It is clear that he does not care and he has completely given up on trying to be influencial in anyway. One wonders if he ever tried! He is now clearly protecting himself and lining his own pocket.
Blair was not in the US negotiating a ceasefire as he would like us to believe. It is unbelievable and an insult to everyone who has called for his resignation that he is still in power. The people of Lebanon and Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan are now paying with their lives and for this the Labour Party has to take some collective responsibility. We must get rid off him this time, we must continue to show the world that we do not agree with our government.
This Saturdays national demonstration is so important in doing that!

Support Military Families Against the War

Tony Blair has refused to meet the families of those killed in Iraq. He has not visited the many hundreds of soldiers wounded in his war nor attended
any of the funerals of those killed.
The families are demanding a meeting with Tony Blair because they need an accounting for the reasons the country was taken to war and the reasons why they have suffered so much.
On Wednesday April 26 the military families are organising a lobby of MPs in parliament. Following the lobby they will be laying a wreath at the Cenotaph and delivering a petition to Downing Street. They are calling on other families and servicemen and women to join then to make clear to Tony Blair that he cannot continue to ignore them.

Iran is Bush's Iraq exit strategy

I believe that the US neo-cons have no intention of leaving Iraq without first imposing an economy that serves American big business interests. They will almost certainly leave air bases to watch over 'their' interests, as they have elsewhere in the world. By taking control of Iraqi oil and awarding contracts to US companies, they are ensuring that the Iraqis pay for the occupation.
Many people I speak to think things would get worse in Iraq if the troops left. While we won't know unless the troops leave, even those Iraqis who supported the Coalition now see that the occupation itself has created a breeding ground for the insurgents. I think there could well be an increase in bloodshed if we leave, however things are continuing to get worse for the Iraqi people whilst we stay. We have to recognise that we have no business being in Iraq and that the overwhelming majority of Iraqis, nearly 90% in a recent poll, want us to leave. Where is the democracy on that issue? Where is the referendum?
The long-term stability of the region has been seriously threatened and we are now faced with the prospect of an attack on Iran. Many people don't believe that George Bush is mad enough to do this, even though he has commissioned plans detailing how it could be done and a timetable for doing so. The US and British governments have lost the war they started in Iraq and it is pro-Iranians who now hold key positions in the new government of Iraq: a further excuse for the Neo-Cons to press for an attack on Iran.
The US are now planning for the same process of sanctions and air strikes on Iran. The US are waging a propaganda war through the UN and Blair, Brown, Straw and the gang are all playing the same game. Staying in Iraq does not just mean staying in Iraq, it means expanding the war into a mass regional conflict.
We should bring the troops home now!

Troops Out of Iraq, Don't attack Iran

I am hoping that there will be a lot of people from Cambridge on the Stop the War demo, called for Saturday the 18th of March. We are getting a good response for the coaches. Opposition to the occupation of Iraq is at an all time high both in Iraq and here. Now the US government is busy bullying its way round the UN and the international community trumping up the case against Iran whilst breaking international laws left, right and centre. What hypocrisy.Craig Murray, the former British ambassador to Uzbekistan, is speaking at a Stop the War meeting in the Latimer Room, Clare College, Cambridge on Monday the 13th at 8pm.

Hook, line, sinker - published 25/10/04
THE British media has bought the Government's disgraceful line on the Iraq war hook, line and sinker.
The rhetoric adopted by the newspaper, television and radio news is totally accepting of the atrocities on innocent Iraqis being committed in our name.
The news media has a responsibility to keep the pressure on the new Labour government.
Tony Blair has not said sorry for his mistakes over the invasion of Iraq because he does not feel he has committed any.
He is in total support of the Bush regime's neo-conservative crusade and the news continues to treat this as acceptable and an aside to the "war on terror"!
I feel that the bombing of Fallujah by F-16s and helicopter gunships is a most calculated and brutal terrorist attack. The US has already killed hundreds of civilians in a developed city four times the size of Cambridge.
The people of Fallujah were some of the most outspoken against Sadham Hussein's government.
Do we not need to look at why these people reject the outside involvement of the UK and US so much? The next few weeks will see us endorse the killing of hundreds more civilians in the most upsetting piece of republican election campaigning.
Can the news please report the continuing war!

The news media has a responsibility to keep the pressure on the new Labour government.

He is in total support of the Bush regime's neo-conservative crusade and the news continues to treat this as acceptable and an aside to the "war on terror"!
I feel that the bombing of Fallujah by F-16s and helicopter gunships is a most calculated and brutal terrorist attack. The US has already killed hundreds of civilians in a developed city four times the size of Cambridge.
The people of Fallujah were some of the most outspoken against Sadham Hussein's government.
Do we not need to look at why these people reject the outside involvement of the UK and US so much? The next few weeks will see us endorse the killing of hundreds more civilians in the most upsetting piece of republican election campaigning.
Can the news please report the continuing war!
