Hi Tom, great post
But it is hard to get the message across
Some Labour people voted for stock-transfer of Council Housing to stop immigrants getting Council Housing.
If that was an issue, and there was an increasing demand for 'affordable' housing by immigrants from Poland & eastern Europe - the answer was not, to sell Council housing to Housing Associations.
That's like cutting off your own nose to spite your own face.
The other argument used was that many of those living in Council housing were receiving housing benefit, and therefore were not affected by rent increases.
But the rent instead of going to the Council (and Housing Corporation) is now going to private Housing Associations
Sure to build more 'affordable housing'
But if Cambridge City Council voted to become an Independent Housing Authority, it would be able to keep the £20 million a year from Council rents, borrow money for 'new' build - and receive grants & subsidies from government for 'affordable' homes
